The Alger is an excellent example of a neighborhood movie theater that was once common throughout the city of Detroit. Built in the Art Moderne style, its overall form and materials remain largely intact. The theatre’s styling is clean and simple with strong horizontal lines typical of Art Moderne. The main interior spaces include a two-story vestibule, lobby, and the auditorium which have minimal ornamental plaster detailing on the ceilings and walls of the vestibule. The master plan will restore the building to be a functioning theater up-to-date with current code and accessibility, and maximize the available amenities. Consulting services included building conditions assessment, programming, plaster ceiling and structural condition assessment and documentation, and as-built drawings.
