The Cultural Center was built in 1910 to serve as assembly space for the Holy Redeemer Parish in Southwest Detroit. The entire parish grounds, including the High School and Cultural Center, were listed as a national historic district in 2002. The Holy Redeemer High School was closed in 2005 and re-opened as Detroit Cristo Rey High School in 2008. Cristo Rey High School provides a college-preparatory Catholic high school education that emphasizes faith, morals and service to the community. It has seen rising enrollment since it opened which led them to purchase the vacant Cultural Center in 2013 for future expansion. The Cultural Center is a prominent building along Vernor and its renovation would benefit the High School and the entire Vernor corridor. The design is a complete exterior and interior restoration and will include ADA accessibility, classrooms and office space, as well as revitalize the theater for school activities and community events.
