Located within the Eastern Market Historic District, the Gratiot Central Market was Built in 1915 and designed by Detroit firm Smith, Hinchman & Grylls. The building was to provide an indoor market space for the selling of meats and dairy products including eggs, milk, and cheese. Several fires destroyed much of the market building and the impressive terracotta wall along Gratiot Avenue is the only component of the original building that was retained. The ambitious redevelopment incorporates adjacent properties enabling expansive retail along Gratiot Avenue. The new four-story building will be constructed above the market providing 144 apartments. Phased construction projects have been considered in development planning.
