The School of Architecture is located on the main campus of the University of Detroit Mercy. The SOA Building was constructed in 1917 in the Beaux Arts Style and has undergone numerous renovations over the past 20 years. The Lower Level Studio and Corridor renovation project completes the vision of the school’s master plan. A key element of the renovation project included the opening of walls along the corridor to insert glass doors and sidelight windows to allow natural light deeper into the building. Additionally, spaces were “carved out” on each side of the corridor for a presentation space, light table room, and the woodshop. Direct and indirect lighting was added to the full length of the corridor. Wall wash light fixtures were added at specific locations to emphasize display panels. New pin-up boards were added along the corridor; walls and ceilings were painted; and the concrete floors were polished.
